Why Can Two 100 cSt Silicone Oils Behave Differently at Low Temperature?

When selecting silicone oil, buyers often start with viscosity.

For example, if two silicone oils are both rated at 100 cSt at 25°C, will they provide similar flow behavior at -30°C or -40°C?

Not necessarily.

A viscosity value measured at one temperature does not describe the complete viscosity-temperature behavior of a fluid.

1. Why Is Room-Temperature Viscosity Not Enough?

As temperature decreases, fluid viscosity generally increases.

However, different silicone fluids can show different viscosity changes as temperature falls.
