Ethyl silicone oil is a highly specialized fluid engineered for extreme environments, making it significantly more expensive than standard methyl silicone oils. To ensure you receive a product that meets your exact engineering requirements, it is critical to review specific technical data before making a purchase.
1. Viscosity and Temperature-Viscosity Coefficient
Viscosity is the most fundamental specification. You must verify that the kinematic viscosity (typically measured in centistokes at 25°C) matches your lubrication or damping needs. More importantly, check the temperature-viscosity coefficient. Ethyl silicone oil is prized for maintaining a stable viscosity across extreme temperature fluctuations. Ensure the data sheet confirms its fluidity at your lowest expected operating temperature (often down to -70°C) and its stability up to 150°C.
2. Pour Point and Flash Point
For extreme cold applications, the pour point must be significantly lower than your minimum operating temperature to prevent crystallization or gelling. Conversely, for high-temperature environments, verify the open-cup flash point (which typically exceeds 265°C for high-quality ethyl silicone oil) to ensure there is no risk of ignition or excessive thermal degradation.
