While the silicone polymer provides the backbone, hydrophobic fumed silica acts as the critical reinforcing agent, endowing the sealant with the structural integrity, thixotropy, and moisture resistance required for demanding applications.
The primary role of hydrophobic fumed silica is **reinforcement**. Pure silicone gum is mechanically weak. Fumed silica, consisting of a three-dimensional branched chain structure with an extremely high specific surface area, forms a strong physical network within the polymer matrix. The "hydrophobic" nature—achieved by treating the silica surface with silanes to replace reactive hydroxyl groups with methyl groups—is vital.
