The negative impact of climate change has attracted extensive attention of the international community, but the actions of different regions to cope with climate change are slow. On April 2, 2020, Nanjing University, as one of the initiators, and the University of New South Wales officially announced the establishment of the International University climate alliance. The climate alliance will strive to become the "leading voice of science-based mitigation and adaptation strategies" and accelerate the global response to climate change.
The climate alliance is composed of 40 prestigious universities in the global climate change research field (the list is attached). Members will carry out interdisciplinary research on several of the most important research topics in the climate change field, and strengthen interaction with policy makers, educators and business leaders. Members of the alliance will work together to explore the most effective way to disseminate research facts related to climate change to the public, and actively participate in major global scientific research on climate change, as well as mitigation and adaptation strategies. It is reported that after its establishment, the alliance will focus on the forefront of international dialogue on climate change and carry out a series of activities. In the near future, the alliance plans to carry out an activity focusing on research, issue a joint statement of the climate alliance, identify key research and development areas that need high attention in global climate change research, and put forward suggestions on accelerating global response to climate change before the November 2020 UNFCCC conference.
