Editor's note: at 10:10 p.m. on March 27, 2020, Beijing time, Professor Zhu Feng, senior researcher of Chahar society, executive director of South China Sea research collaborative innovation center of Nanjing University and President of the Institute of international relations, was invited to give an all English online lecture to teachers and students of the center. At the same time, the lecture is open to the Washington campus and the Italian campus of the Johns Hopkins Institute for advanced international studies (SAIS), attracting nearly 100 teachers and students from all over the world. This paper is a summary of Professor Zhu Feng's speech in the lecture.
In China, novel coronavirus epidemic is still continuing, but basically controlled. The focus of the epidemic has largely shifted to Europe and the United States. How to control the spread of the epidemic as soon as possible has become an increasingly urgent demand of the United States. Professor Zhu Feng said that it is no exaggeration to say that at present, all mankind are facing unprecedented crises. Only by maintaining cooperation can China and the United States survive the crisis. But at the moment when China's epidemic prevention measures have achieved initial results, various unfriendly voices have been heard frequently. On the Internet, some US politicians politicized and stigmatized China's epidemic situation, harming the efforts of China US cooperation in fighting the epidemic, and seriously interfering with China US relations and global epidemic prevention and control. Professor Zhu Feng pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 41 years ago, bilateral relations have not been smooth sailing. At present, China US relations have come to a new critical juncture. The epidemic should not be a reason for confrontation between the two sides, but an opportunity for the two sides to strengthen cooperation.
Cooperation is the only way to move forward together. China and the United States are on the same boat to fight the epidemic. Whether it is SARS, Ebola or H1N1, these viral infectious diseases are the common enemies of mankind from ancient times to the present, and also a major threat to the global economy and world peace. At this time, countries need to strengthen cooperation and work together to meet major challenges. It is not only the responsibility of China, but also the common responsibility of the whole international community to control and ultimately eliminate the new coronavirus. At present, the urgent task of the international community is to continuously improve the prevention mechanism and response capacity of the epidemic. To this end, the international community, including China and the United States, needs to be highly united and sincerely cooperative. Only in this way can human beings defeat the virus as soon as possible and return to normal life order as soon as possible.
Although the current outbreak is a major test for China, it is also a driving force. Through this epidemic, China will make new contributions to human beings in medical prevention and treatment, diagnosis and prevention mechanism construction of infectious diseases.
