Choosing silicone oil viscosity isn't simply a matter of "the higher the better" or "the lower the better," but rather depends on the specific application. Silicone oil viscosity (usually measured in cSt) directly determines its flowability, film thickness, load-bearing capacity, and volatility. When selecting, you can use the following four core dimensions for precise matching:
1. Match the viscosity range according to functional requirements:
* **Ultra-low/low viscosity (1~100 cSt):** Excellent flowability, similar to water or cooking oil. Suitable for applications requiring rapid spreading or penetration, such as precision instrument lubrication, electronic component impregnation, defoamer base oil, and refreshing carriers in cosmetics.
* **Medium viscosity (100~1000 cSt):** Balances flowability and film-forming properties. The main range for industrial mold release agents, general lubricants (such as guide rails and hinges), and cosmetics for balancing skin feel (such as BB creams).
* **High/ultra-high viscosity (above 1000 cSt):** Extremely strong adhesion, resulting in a thick film. Suitable for heavy-duty dampers, shock absorbers, grease base oils, and sealing and cushioning under extreme conditions.
2. Consider operating temperature and volatility: Silicone oils have a very low viscosity-temperature coefficient, meaning temperature changes have little effect on their viscosity. However, the volatility varies significantly between different viscosities. At temperatures above 150°C or in confined spaces, low-viscosity silicone oils (<100 cSt) evaporate significantly, potentially leading to failure; in such cases, high-viscosity silicone oils (1000 cSt or higher) should be selected to ensure long-term stability.
3. Assess load-bearing and lubrication requirements: Low-viscosity silicone oils are suitable for lightly loaded sliding parts to reduce starting torque; however, for applications requiring heavy pressure or protection from direct metal-to-metal contact, high-viscosity silicone oils must be selected to provide sufficient oil film thickness.
4. Consider the compatibility of the formulation system: In cosmetic or coating formulations, a single viscosity often cannot adequately address all performance requirements. A common strategy is to use a combination of high and low viscosity oils (e.g., 50 cSt with 350 cSt) to balance the product's lightness, spreadability, and moisturizing ability.
