While it is theoretically possible to find a single grade of fumed silica that provides reinforcement for Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV), High Temperature Vulcanizing (HTV), and Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR), it is rarely practical or optimal. These three silicone categories have vastly different viscosity requirements and processing methods, making a "one-size-fits-all" approach inefficient.
The Viscosity Barrier
The primary obstacle is viscosity.
- **LSR:** Requires very low viscosity to flow into complex molds. It typically uses **hydrophobic** fumed silica with lower surface area to prevent the compound from becoming too thick to pump.
- **RTV:** Needs moderate viscosity for extrusion but requires thixotropy to prevent sagging. It often utilizes hydrophilic or treated silica at medium loadings.
- **HTV:** These are solid gums that require massive reinforcement. They use high loadings of **hydrophilic** high-surface-area silica. Using a single grade would likely result in an LSR that is too thick to process or an HTV gum that lacks sufficient tensile strength.
Surface Chemistry Conflicts
The chemical treatment of the silica also creates a divide. HTV and RTV-2 often rely on hydrophilic silica to maximize reinforcement through hydrogen bonding. However, LSR formulations almost exclusively require hydrophobic silica to ensure compatibility with the platinum catalyst and to maintain flow. A hydrophilic grade used in LSR could inhibit the cure or cause storage instability.
