1. What is the chemical nature of the sealant base?
The polarity of the system dictates the type of silica. Hydrophilic fumed silica is ideal for polar, water-based systems, while hydrophobic grades are essential for non-polar systems like silicone, polyurethane, and epoxy sealants. Using the wrong type can lead to poor dispersion and formulation failure.

2. What level of thixotropy and anti-sag is required?
Fumed silica forms a 3D network that provides thixotropy. If the sealant will be applied to vertical surfaces, a higher surface area grade or a higher loading of silica is needed to increase the yield value and prevent sagging or slumping after application.

Fumed silica is preferred over other fillers because its nanoscale particles can provide thickening and reinforcement without significantly compromising the clarity of the final product.

5. What are the long-term storage and environmental conditions?
For moisture-sensitive systems like RTV silicones, hydrophobic silica is mandatory to extend shelf life and prevent premature curing. Additionally, fumed silica enhances the sealant's thermal stability and UV resistance, ensuring long-term durability in harsh outdoor environments.
