In order to thoroughly implement the spirit of the 11th Party Congress of Nanjing University and speed up the construction of "double first class", on the morning of April 20, 2020, the teaching and engineering branch of Nanjing University Education Research Institute launched the second party day activity of the new semester using Tencent conference software online, with the theme of "postgraduate innovation ability training seminar". The meeting was held in the form of keynote and discussion, and Professor Zhang Hongxia of our institute was invited to make a keynote speech. Then, everyone expressed their opinions and suggestions around the theme. In this activity, a total of 15 faculty members participated, including 4 non party members. They gathered together and had a heated discussion.

First of all, Professor Zhang Hongxia gave a lecture on the theme of "the cultivation of the three senses" of doctoral students and the innovation of doctoral dissertation ". She said that to improve the innovation of doctoral students, it is necessary to cultivate their research consciousness, critical consciousness and model consciousness. Research consciousness is to abide by the common norms of scientific research: "based on facts, repeatable, cumulative and falsifiable. We should pay attention to the innovation of the thesis, not the literary style and rhetoric. "Establish a theoretical view based on facts and reasoning. At the same time, we should encourage and train students to treat a large number of unscientific and nonstandard phenomena in published papers with a critical attitude, not superstitious about authority or western theories.
Teachers should attach great importance to the writing guidance of the "discussion" part of the thesis. The so-called discussion is a systematic demonstration of all possible doubts raised by the imaginary and potential opponents, including the reliability of data, the logic of reasoning, and the contradictions found by the predecessors. The localization of research is to use the method of international norms to study Chinese phenomena, and dare to abstract Chinese theories from them. Finally, we should make students understand that different levels of models are suitable for different research problems, and we should not unilaterally pursue advanced statistical methods.

In this regard, Secretary Zong Xiaohua deeply agreed that the design model should be based on theoretical basis and practical observation, and the statistical analysis means should be upgraded from basic correlation analysis to causal inference level. In addition, the sampling survey should strictly follow the sampling principle to reduce the result error caused by sample deviation. Wang Yashan, associate professor, put forward his own suggestions for the above problems. He believed that it could guide students to understand and use the current authoritative public database, and then solve the problems such as unscientific sampling and difficult data acquisition. In addition, he could help graduate students to accumulate knowledge by reading the classic literature at home and abroad on a regular basis.
In addition, how to guide students to break the inherent thinking and cultivate theoretical thinking is a problem we need to focus on. Professor Lu Linhai believes that research thinking should be fully reflected in research design, rather than focusing on complex technical methods. Liu Xiao said that research thinking should be problem-based rather than data-based.

In addition, in view of the general problems existing in the research of Postgraduates' papers, teachers have also expressed their own views. Professor Wang Yunlai pointed out that in the near future, a cloud forum will be held to improve the work of Postgraduates in the Institute, which will focus on facts, problems, causes, loopholes and detailed rules, and further improve the relevant systems and requirements for papers. Wang Shiyue, associate professor, thinks it is necessary to standardize the writing of papers and improve the standards of papers.
Professor Cao Taisheng believes that postgraduate academic research should be awed, and relevant norms should be formulated to make them correct their research attitude. In addition, teachers can cooperate with each other to bring students into different research teams for learning. Professor Yu Xiulan and Associate Professor Sun Junhua also believe that different teams cooperate with each other to guide students in academic salons, conferences and discussions, which can promote the integration of knowledge among different subjects and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of guidance.
At last, Secretary Zong Xiaohua summarized the speech and said that in the future, such activities can be carried out in a richer form to promote the continuous improvement of the quality of postgraduate training in our institute.
