"Quanjude" let me reexamine the application
I decided to go abroad when I was a sophomore, because my major ranking in the Department has always been very high, so I didn't prepare for my language score in advance, nor did I seek for the experience of applying for going abroad from the seniors and sisters. I applied for the experience of going abroad in a cursory way. Finally, I received "Quanjude" without any accident. This is a painful lesson. I have summed up several reasons myself, which should be helpful to the following math PhD applicants. After all, only the losers will analyze their own shortcomings carefully, and most of the winners will only enjoy their joy.
Reason 1: too much emphasis on GPA and ranking. In fact, the foreign student evaluation system is not the same as the domestic one, so our GPA is just a number for them, and has no decisive role; and most of the students competing with you are not students of our school, so there is not much reference value. So no matter the GPA is high or low, you should not underestimate or give up the application.
Reason 2: there is no scientific research experience and a letter of recommendation from a foreign professor available; this should be an important part of the application and should be prepared in advance. If you don't have the ability to teach magnetic, you can consider consulting with the elder sister and the consultant.
Reason 3: insufficient preparation of materials, low score of TOEFL oral English, 17 points; because of TA, oral English should not be less than 20 in principle. In fact, every school has different considerations in evaluating students. For example, some will value GPA, some will value GRE and sub scores, some will need you to send a report card, some of these information will be written on the official website, some will have to rely on the senior or intermediary to tell you.
How do I prepare my application again
According to the reason of my failure, I have made corresponding measures to make up for my own shortcomings.
First of all, I set up a professor of UIUC during the summer vacation and expressed my willingness to do scientific research with him, so I successfully got the J visa, stayed in UIUC in the autumn semester of 19, and got a good letter of recommendation from the professor.
In addition, I also tried to seize the opportunity to improve my oral English there. At last, I understood that English is actually a language without right or wrong. It's just a way to express myself. Therefore, I no longer rigidly expressed right or wrong, but focused on expressing my own ideas, and finally passed the barrier.
An unexpected result is that I found another person to study under the recommendation of my good friend. Since then, my application season has changed from a person's suffering to a team's bravery to kill enemies (friend, fight a group, don't bring it alone)
Team operations in application season
My CD Sherry teacher has been urging me to prepare all kinds of materials, which is more urgent than me. Especially after my first TOEFL kneeling in foreign countries, she sent me a lot of oral materials at the first time. I have read every copy, which is very helpful. For a patient with procrastination, there is someone urging you to be really moved.
Another important one is the academic tutor Mr. W. he not only provides me with a reference for school selection, but also gives me a brainstorm when I don't have inspiration for my papers. It's very rewarding to talk with him every time I meet a bottleneck!
