Why San Martin?
My original intention is very simple. I want to choose the best and most suitable clothing design institute. Saint Martin's multiple and single preparatory courses can be said to be the best in the UK and even in the world. The reason is that teachers will teach students according to their aptitude and guide your own design direction according to your design style and characteristics. And my personal preference for free, independent teaching in the UK gives me time to observe life, think and do research.

In fact, there is no rigid basic requirement for the foundation. For the painting level, the most important thing is to be able to express the style you want and the overall feeling. It is precisely because Saint Martin does not require students to learn rigid realistic painting water products, but encourages everyone to develop their own nature and draw "the most own" style, so as to cultivate so many different styles and unique talents.
As for the basis of clothing major, there is no rigid requirement to master the construction, drawing and patternmaking skills, because the school will slowly infiltrate the teaching content into the curriculum later. But I still hope that if you are willing to learn in advance is the best, win in the starting line!
Of course, the feeling, cognition and basic aesthetics of clothing are the basic aspects that need to be controlled in the early stage. For the students who are studying A-level, I recommend continuing to study art. Because it can help you to enter the British art atmosphere in advance, and help you to develop and accumulate your inspiration in the early stage of your works collection.
Language degree
The requirement for my IELTS English score is 5 (I'm shocked), but the normal requirement is 5.5. If I'm a bachelor, I can get 6.
So as long as we work hard, English is still relatively simple.

But whether it's done by myself or with the help of an organization, I still want to share some key points here according to my experience of preparatory and undergraduate courses.
1: clear personal style, no template

What is this personal style? In fact, it is simply to refuse to copy or copy.
The plagiarism here is not only directly copying other people's works, but also completely following the style of previous works, typesetting and changing to the designed clothes.
As a design student, we must have our own style and characteristics! In the process of learning, plagiarism is not only not good for you, but also you should believe that the tutor can easily see whether the work belongs to plagiarism.
Especially for the interview teachers in St. Martin, they have read thousands of works. What you do is very similar to what they have seen before, or the style is repeated so much that it will bring pressure to your first interview in the future: because the interviewer may have a question mark in his mind. It's hard to remember your personal style, but it may also indirectly lead to the "ordinary" evaluation of your works.

3: research and development

Research determines the depth and pattern of your work. When research reaches a certain depth, your thinking will unconsciously be taken to a higher level, so as to develop more possibilities for finished products. What's more, research is a dialogue between you and the interviewer. How to leave an exclusive impression on the tutor before the interview and bring out your personal charm depends on it.
Before the interview, whether the tutor can understand your idea is determined step by step according to the direction of your research: from your initial idea to your thinking summary and final product, and whether they can be smoothly connected from the beginning to the end.
Research is not only to show your thinking and style, but also to test your logic and integration ability. (the research process will also involve whether we should rely on pinterest or not.)
The library collection system of UL is very powerful, with the largest collection of clothing categories in Europe. So all the students are good at reading, and they will find first-hand or second-hand materials in the book instead of searching online. You should believe that the third-hand information and ideas you see on the Internet will certainly be seen by others. Therefore, to make the most personal style, we need to really rely on primary research (first-hand information), which is also the research method that Saint Martin has been advocating.

Preparatory course is actually a process of exploration, so that you can try different materials and different forms. For example, painting, sculpture, 3D things and so on.
*Observing drawing
One small project per week
The small project will explain the content of the project in a brief on Monday, complete the work on Thursday and crit on Friday.
During the class, the teacher will focus more on training your hands-on ability, and take you to do some hands-on projects back to basics. For example, one minute of one stroke training, five minutes of fast model sketch. There are often field trips to London for architecture and landscape painting.
Interestingly, these architectural sketches after the field trip will be taught by teachers to be used for reconstruction, such as developing the silhouette of clothing on the contact of architectural structure. The tutor will also tell us the principles behind these experience projects, for example, the principles behind this activity are the principles of clothing printing.

Like most of my preparatory students, I am a proper layman before I go to preparatory school. Facing the future study, I am basically confused, and there are many basic projects that I will not. But preparatory school is like a boost, which makes people grow rapidly in learning. So after the first year of undergraduate study, we will feel a lot easier, and we can master the rhythm of undergraduate more easily.

Our tutor often mentions that you should never tear any page of the work collection you made in the preparatory course, because you can see your potential and growth from every page.
When I first came to the UK, there was always a beginning of maladjustment in my life. Coupled with the tangible and intangible pressure of the preparatory course, I didn't sleep well with the people around me in that year. Every day, I keep making things.
When preparing for a course, the teacher often crits by putting all the works on the ground, and then the teacher will only point out the bad ones. This kind of crit may be considered cruel, but it is also the driving force for us to do things well.
So whether it's in St. Martin or in prep, if you want to make a living, you have to choose to sleep less.
