A cold autumn rain, as the weather turns cool in Vancouver, more and more can feel the power of Canadian winter. Apart from people, houses should also be ready for winter. Did you check the house before opening the fireplace and heating up?
Xiaobian, a friend who lives in an independent house, had enough heating in his home last winter, but it was not warm and the temperature didn't go up. At night, it was too cold to die. He thought it was a problem with the heating. When settling the electricity bill, I received the bill from bchydro. I didn't know it. I was shocked. It was nearly 100 yuan higher than that in summer.
My friend found someone to check it, only to find that there was a crack beside the window. All the air-conditioning came in from the crack, and all the hot air ran out, wasting the heat in vain.
"Late summer and autumn are the best inspection seasons because you don't want to wait until after the first snow to realize it's cold inside," said Shawn Monteith, a Canadian builder.
There are some very simple ways that you can do it yourself, which can help the owner to spend the whole winter warm!
Toilet paper test
Stick toilet paper on the window. Although it looks silly, it is definitely a simple and practical ventilation test.
Windows, doors, vents and exits, where cold air can easily enter the home through cracks. Holding a lighted match or a light toilet paper, such as a Kleenex, is a great way to determine where the air is coming from.
Monteith said: "if the flames flash, it means the air is coming in. Another way is to use a piece of toilet paper and stick it on the cracks around the doors and windows. The small air flow in will blow away the toilet paper or facial tissue paper. "
If you have a fireplace in your home and don't plan to use it in winter, the cold may come in from the chimney and the heat will be lost. Installing an expandable chimney balloon can prevent air from entering and leaving.
Seal the cracks with glue, but be careful when using. Monteith explained that if the temperature is too low, some silicone fillers may not stick.
Avoid inhalation of dust
If it's just too cold outside and you have to turn on the road for heating, you must maintain it before use. Changing the filter once a season, whether three to four months, can effectively prevent the risk of inhalation of bacteria and ensure that your heating air flow is not blocked by residues in the filter.
Monteith said, "if I'm going to start my fireplace for the first time, I'll make sure the filter is clean. I don't think anyone would want an old filter to blow the old air into the house. "
Windows keep warm
Owners do not have to spend money and effort to buy and install new windows. Just a few simple ways to keep windows warm.
Monteith said plastic film insulation can form shrink wrap barriers on windows to prevent heat loss. Window paper is sold in hardware store, and the installation is very simple: after measuring the size of the window, cut the window paper into a suitable size, and fix it with double-sided tape. Then, seal it with a blower. Be sure to buy something proportionate or larger than the window.
If you don't want to seal the windows with plastic, you can hang thick curtains on the windows, and draw the curtains when there is no direct sunlight, which helps keep out the cold.
Add additional insulation
Adding insulating material is a reliable method of heat preservation. Add more insulation around the attic, vents and ducts to keep the warm air in the room and allow the cold water vapor to condense outside.
Monteith said, "the principle of insulation is that there are air bubbles in it, which can block the air from entering."
