Types of silicones and their uses

Hits: 635 img

There are several different forms of silicone with varying degrees of crosslinking. The degree of crosslinking describes how interconnected the siloxane chains are, the higher the degree of crosslinking, the stiffer the siloxane material. This variable is directly related to properties such as the strength of the polymer and its melting point. Common forms of silicone and some of its applications include:

Silicone oil, consisting of straight chains of uncrosslinked silicone polymers. These fluids have found use as lubricants, paint additives, and ingredients in cosmetics.

Silicone gel, with little cross-linking between its polymer chains. Silicone gels are used in cosmetics to form a protective layer on the surface of the skin and help the skin retain moisture. Silicone gel is also used as a material for breast implants and the soft parts of some insoles.

Silicone elastomers, also known as silicone rubbers, contain more crosslinks between the polymer chains and thus have rubber-like properties. Silicone rubber is used as insulators in the electronics industry, as seals in aerospace vehicles, and as oven mitts for baking.

Silicone resins, which are rigid forms of siloxanes, have a high crosslink density. These resins are commonly used in construction materials such as heat-resistant coatings and weathering materials.
