The sustainable development of human society is facing major challenges in the fields of information, energy, environment and health. Traditional disciplinary division and simplified knowledge system are not enough to solve such complex problems. Aiming at the international scientific frontier and the overall layout of national industrial development, the college takes the materials discipline as the center, extends to optics, energy and life medicine, finds a breakthrough from the deep cross integration of disciplines, and solves the common needs that human beings cannot avoid.

College profile
The college was officially established in December 2009 and launched in October 2011. Its purpose is to aim at the forefront of modern engineering and build a teaching team with international competitiveness; to carry out high-level scientific and technological research for the major needs of human beings and the country in materials, information, health and energy; to meet the needs of high-level talents in the field of modern engineering and applied science, Cultivate leading talents.
The college has four departments and one center: Department of materials science and engineering, Department of quantum electronics and optical engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of energy science and engineering and modern engineering teaching and experimental technology center. There are five majors in material physics, material chemistry, photoelectric information engineering, new energy science and engineering and biomedical engineering. The college has many provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, such as Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of functional material design principle and application technology, Key Laboratory of intelligent optical sensing and regulation of the Ministry of Education (class B). With elegant environment and international standard, the 60000 square meter college building will provide superior space for the development of the college and the collection of high-level talents.

Scientific research achievements
Using molecular beam epitaxy technology to grow and transfer the single atomic layer precision of non layered oxide perovskite materials, combined with the structural analysis of transmission electron microscope, a novel two-dimensional material based on oxide perovskite system has been successfully prepared, which opens a door to rich two-dimensional quantum phenomena with strong correlation [nature, 2019]
A new achromatic optical field imaging system based on super structured lens array is designed, which combines the broadband continuous achromatic super structured surface lens and optical field imaging for the first time, and solves the problem of continuous achromatic of visible light that cannot be realized by traditional optical field camera [Nature Nanotechnology, 2019]
A gene editing technology controlled by near-infrared light is developed, which uses the ability of near-infrared light to penetrate deep tissues to achieve controlled gene cutting of target points. This technology reduces the adverse effect of gene editing technology's Miss effect, realizes the effective treatment of tumor in vivo, and has a wide application prospect in cancer gene therapy [science advance, 2019]
A solar desalination device based on two-dimensional water channel is developed. The unique two-dimensional water channel provides sufficient water supply, reduces heat conduction loss, greatly improves the light steam conversion efficiency of the device (more than 90%), and provides a new idea to enhance the desalination efficiency [PNAs, nature photonics, 2016]

The college implements the "three three systems" talent training program of the school, carries out in-depth research and practice of talent training mode and education and teaching reform, and builds Jiangsu Province "material science and engineering technology" teaching experiment center. In combination with the characteristics of the major, we have established talent training practice bases in SK Hynix, BOE and other companies, focusing on training and improving students' innovation ability and engineering practice ability. The college has won one national teaching achievement award and one Jiangsu Provincial Teaching Achievement Award in terms of talent cultivation; more than 30 SCI papers or patent applications have been published for undergraduate research achievements; it has won awards frequently in major events such as "Challenge Cup" competition and national photoelectric design competition.
The college carries out the "3 + 1 + 1" degree joint program with UIUC and UCI. Students participating in the program will have the opportunity to obtain the undergraduate degree of Nanjing University and the master's degree of the other university within five years. The college has established long-term cooperation with Freiburg University in Germany, Australian National University, Ohio State University in the United States and other well-known foreign universities, and regularly selected excellent students to participate in international exchanges.

Among the 2019 undergraduate graduates, 62 chose to go to higher education in China, and all of them were admitted to double first-class schools, 80% of them were still enrolled in Nanjing University; 28 chose to go abroad for further education, and the number of people admitted to the top 100 universities in QS World reached 87.5%; 41 directly employed students, and the employment industry is mainly concentrated in advanced manufacturing industry, information transmission, software and information technology Service industry. Employment units include high-tech enterprises such as Huawei, ZTE and China Telecom, and Internet head enterprises such as Tencent, Suning e-commerce, Netease and Xiaomi.
