In 2019, Yang Yirui, 2015 undergraduate of Mathematics Department of Nanjing University, won the gold medal of Applied Mathematics and computational mathematics group in the first Alibaba global mathematics competition. In April 2020, the finalist list of the second Alibaba global mathematics competition was announced, and Nantah advanced 27 people, 24 of them from the mathematics department, second only to Peking University, which once again attracted the attention and admiration of all parties. Win the battle of gods
Alibaba global mathematics competition is held by Alibaba. It is a grand gathering for all mathematics lovers around the world. The first time, it attracted more than 40000 people from all over the world to participate in the competition. 328 people were shortlisted in the final, and 51 people won the final. They won the tickets to enter the winter master class. They studied for two weeks with internationally renowned mathematicians represented by Professor Zhang Yitang. Only four of them won the gold medal, including MIT, UC Berkeley, Nanjing University and Peking University.
Yang Yirui, the winner of Nanjing University, is a 2015 undergraduate majoring in information and Computing Science in the Department of mathematics. He has won the first prize of Jiangsu Province in the national undergraduate mathematics competition, the commendation award of Qiu Chengtong's undergraduate mathematics competition (Applied Mathematics and Computing Mathematics), Du Xia scholarship, the people's scholarship and the top program scholarship, and was awarded as an excellent student of Nanjing University.

Training mode
The Department of mathematics has established an efficient academic exchange and international cooperation mechanism, and signed a student joint training or exchange learning agreement with the Department of mathematics of the University of Wisconsin, Rutgers University and Nagoya University of Japan. Every year, nearly 100 well-known scholars at home and abroad (including fields prize winners, lifetime professors of world-class universities, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc.) are invited to visit and give lectures, and dozens of Outstanding Undergraduates go to first-class universities abroad for exchange study.
The Department of mathematics adopts a diversified talent training mode. Undergraduate students enroll students according to major categories. The first and second grades are not divided into majors, and basic training is strengthened. The third and fourth grades carry out separate training according to the different characteristics and needs of different types of students, according to the mathematical model and the mathematical application model, through the courses of undergraduate, master and doctoral, and offer application-oriented elective courses and entrepreneurship courses.
The mathematics department gathers first-class teachers to forge first-class courses.
