Reporter: it's only two years since primary school. At the age of 8, you start your first year of junior high school. At the age of 13, you are expected to graduate as a doctor at the age of 22. Many people around you will call you "Xueba"? What makes you "run" so fast?
Song Wenqing: I think it should be earlier to find the right way and take advantage of time. In terms of IQ, I don't think I have much advantage over my peers. If we must say the advantage, we have come into contact with science earlier and have been following this road diligently.
My growing environment is very "science and Engineering", can be said to grow up with electronic and mechanical products. My parents read about computers before, and worked on mechanical products in their old company. When I was a child, I would play with mechanical products as a detachable toy. Later, my parents will tell me something deeper, such as the difference between imported and domestic mechanical products, to encourage me to do something meaningful. Therefore, when I applied for the junior class of Southeast University, I chose the direction of electricity.
Reporter: do you think you have a smooth journey?
Song Wenqing: in fact, my growth environment is not particularly "downwind and water".
When I was in the first year of senior high school, I tried to take an examination of the University, which was still a little short of the undergraduate line. When I was in senior two, I was admitted by Wu Jianxiong College of Southeast University with a score of 55 points over the key undergraduate line of Shandong Province.
After entering school, I felt that I had gone too fast before, and there was a gap between my knowledge reserve and my classmates, so it was very hard to learn. Many subjects are just over 60 points, this report card is a bit "unbearable", this situation did not change until the end of sophomore year. At that time, I was also very afraid that if I went on like this, I would probably go through the university without exception. I was unwilling to graduate and enter the society like this. So later, Mr. Zhang Chuan, a professor of the State Key Laboratory of mobile communication of Southeast University, recruited some undergraduates to do scientific research. I immediately signed up, opened a new world of scientific research, and found the fun of doing scientific research by hand.
Reporter: what is your current learning state? Do you feel pressure? What is the most fulfilling thing?
Song Wenqing: I am now in the team of Li Li, Professor of the Department of Electronic Science and technology, School of Electronic Science and engineering, Nanjing University. At that time, I also came here.
My lab focuses on chip design and is currently working on reconfigurable chips for artificial intelligence. I am the smallest of more than 20 people in our team, mainly responsible for some management scheduling and task allocation and coordination of the team, including the design of the overall architecture.
In addition to the class, I was in the laboratory facing a computer, with the help of simulation platform and FPGA design, from the front end to the back end of chip design, writing code, also will look at the paper, understand what the current most advanced design looks like, and summarize some of my own work.
In fact, the pressure of scientific research is far greater than the pressure of their own studies. To make a usable chip, we can't make mistakes at every step. If a line of code is wrongly written, the chip that you spent millions or tens of millions on will be directly discarded, which can't tolerate any negligence.
My most successful thing is my first SCI paper, which was written from the senior year. It was only put out in the first year of graduate students. It was revised six times in two years, and was not published until the second year of graduate school. When I see e-mail, I feel that the whole person is dying. It's really too hard. It's the feeling of tears in my eyes.
Reporter: as an Internet native, many college students suffer from "procrastination". Do you have it?
Song Wenqing: I dare not. Every day I list what I have to do, often more than 10 things. First deal with the things at hand, and then go to play with ease, which is also a habit developed from childhood.
When I was little, my parents said it was really easy (laughter). When I started to use QQ in primary school, my parents would encourage me to go online to find some information and collect some videos. But watch an hour of video, play 10 minutes of games, and rarely wander around without planning.
From small to large, my requirement for myself is that we must do well in the things we participate in.
In scientific research, there is a big "node" for many things. If we finish a little less in a day, we will not be able to produce things at last. The list items listed every day must be ticked, otherwise they will not sleep, so if they are delayed, what they delay is their time to sleep, anyway, they are still up at 7:30 the next day.
Every night before I go to bed, it's the most comfortable time of my day. Today's work has been completed, but tomorrow's new task has not come. Reading books and doing sports, I can sleep (laugh) peacefully. After all, there are only 24 hours a day, and I can't change 25 hours. Insisting on doing the right thing every day is also an effective way to relieve pressure.
Reporter: growing up to now, will the people around you give you great expectations? What are your requirements from small to large?
Song Wenqing: in fact, including my parents and tutors, there are no specific requirements, that is, I hope I can do a good job in the project, send more articles, graduate more and more doctors, etc.
From my point of view, for many things, it starts with curiosity, and then it's just to go and see.
When I was a child, this curiosity was manifested in digging up some small things in my life. Why can I use it like this? After doing scientific research, it is to explore specific problems. For example, to optimize the system, how to improve the performance and reduce the complexity.
There are too many things to explore and try, and the same is true in life. For example, if there is something delicious, I always want to try it. If there is something interesting, I always want to go shopping. From childhood to the whole family, I have come to make strategies. Although there are always various accidents in the middle. For example, I can't find the snack bar in the circle. The apartment I ordered is far away from all the scenic spots. But isn't this kind of accident also one of the fun of exploring the unknown?
There are many failures in scientific research. I recently did a project that wanted to apply the method of artificial intelligence to the field of communication. After nearly a year, the data results have been very poor. I asked many teachers and tried many times and the results were still disastrous. During this period, I was depressed and agitated, but later on, I thought that I was not in a loss. There are many channels to success, only one of them was blocked. I can bear it, and I can understand some truth from it.
Reporter: do you have any idols you particularly admire? In what way do you influence yourself?
Song Wenqing: actually, there are many excellent people around. From my tutor, senior brother to my classmates, they are examples for me to learn. I have a doctor senior brother of the post-90s generation in Nantah. Now he is a teacher of Nantah. He is one of the leaders in chip design. I entered the field of chip design from the field of communication, and there were many blank points. In the project, he took me step by step to do experiments, told me how to solve the problem when I met the shell, and gave me scientific research suggestions. I sometimes ask for help in the afternoon.
What I admire very much is that as a scientific researcher, he can separate his life and work and coordinate them very well, which is exactly what I expect my future life to look like.
I'm also trying to live up to my expectation. I don't focus on my work time. I have one day a week that belongs to me completely. This day I go shopping and watch movies. The same is true for the team. When we have a rest, we don't disturb each other. My favorite movies are suspenseful science fiction films or documentary films, such as imitation games, theory of everything, etc. among them, Turing helped the allies to decipher the story of the German cryptosystem "Ingmar", which is really interesting. In recent years, I seldom go to bed before 12 o'clock, but in the evening I do some unarmed exercise, 20 minutes a day, for two or three years.
Reporter: what is your motto in life? What are your plans for the future?
Song Wenqing: my motto in life is "to do things in a high-key way, to be a low-key person".
To be able to do the work of "chip" has always been my dream. My greatest happiness now comes from what we want to do. It's taking shape step by step. Every time I solve a scientific or technical problem, I feel particularly refreshed.
As for the future, there is a possibility, and the dream is gradually clear. I don't think I'm fully determined - what kind of person I want to be in the future, I don't have a specific answer for the time being. First, learn as much as possible, step by step make myself Fuller and more powerful, and then decide the future goal. Maybe I will do research in Colleges and universities, maybe I will go to an enterprise like Huawei and put what I have learned into a new industry. Of course, there is one thing that will never change. I will do more meaningful things to the country and society, which is also the meaning of life.
